    I still don’t get why it was so easy for Matrix to overshadow XMPP as an IRC successor.
    If XMPP already did federation and all the advanced stuff that people expect from modern chat platform, then why did it not become more poular? It was even basis for Google’s chat (Hangouts or whatever the first chat thing withing Gmail was) and for the first Facebook chat if I am not

      Having tried both, I think matrix apps are a bit easier to use. You can migrate your encryption keys around and join chats from new apps without having to deal with signatures.

      Also, maybe the “wow, a new app!” factor helped a lot

      I love XMPP to death but it has many issues as well. Both don’t work as you’d expect from a very basic chat application.
