I’m one of those who work 5 days a week to earn a living. We have our vacation days to enjoy whatever we want to do in life, but we still need to go back to work because people like me will struggle in life if we lose our job.

So I’m curious how some people like the guy in the video can travel around the world for almost a year without working. There are also other vloggers out there who left home to go on a travel and they are still young. Do they already have savings enough to support until they retire?

If you’re really interested, there is a book called, “Vagabonding: An Uncommon Guide to the Art of Long-Term World Travel” by Rolf Potts that goes deep into this. I read it years ago. From what I remember the general idea was that SE Asia is really cheap and you can pick up odd jobs along the way to keep going.

I’m in the US, so the idea of international travel sounds expensive, as it generally means flying across an ocean. However, once you’re across the ocean you can get to a lot of different places pretty easily and inexpensively.

For those making YouTube videos (or some form of travel content), if they can get enough of a following they only need to make enough from a video to cover however much time they spend in the location. If it’s a cheap place, that bar could be pretty low.

I just took a look at hotels in Thailand on Kayak, and a 4 star place starts at $9/night… $280 for a month. Food is also cheap. Even keeping a part time online job can keep someone going for quite a while. Others work for a few months to save money, then travel until they run out, then go work again.

I think it is something that can be fun for a while at a certain stage in life, but very few will spend there whole life this way.

I met a vagabond recently, and he does as you say.

He saved money for a while before starting, and does pick up odd jobs on the way.

He visit cheap places. He’s been in Asia, Africa, and South America.

Also, he saves money doing couch surfing.

So many interesting people and conversations have happened from hosting couch surfers over the years for me.
