Hello all,

Currently I am debating whether or not to switch to a (preferably private/secure) custom rom on my device, however said device had been in use for a while now.

My question is the following: For those who have been in this situation, how have you dealt with the existing data on the device in terms of migration? After all, switching ROM usually involves a factory reset. Creating backups of everything is a bit tedious and timeconsuming and there is always the possibility of forgetting something.

Every time I initiate a backup process, it’s entirely manual. Granted, I do look for tools to help me, but I don’t really trust any third party app to help me back up my data.

    • Go to an app I care about
    • Check if it’s a utility with no data. If it is, delete it
    • Check if the app is for a cloud service, but the data is especially sensitive or includes passwords/keys. Attempt to export a copy of that data first.
    • If it is a nonsensitive cloud service, like Lemmy, I simply delete the app.
    • Check if there is a data export option. If there is, export it to my files, then delete the app. If there’s not, I try to copy things manually
