Halo: Master Chief Collection is an absolute broken mess
Last weekend, I picked up the Halo Master Chief Collection from the Steam sale with a friend. We wanted to play through Halo 1 again, but it was completely unplayable.
You can’t always join another player’s session.
Occasionally, nothing happens when starting a mission.
On certain missions the game just completely freezes.
At certain points the game locks up leaving you unable to move.
It’s just awful. Don’t buy
Consider reinstalling it. Delete all settings and what not. Possibly reset your entire system if need be.
These are not common problems with this collection of games.
That’s a shame you couldn’t enjoy it with your friend. Can I safely assume you’re playing on Windows?
I’ve played a fair bit into the first game on my Steam Deck, and it plays great! Sometimes the compatibility tools in Linux are better for playing older games than those in Windows.
You could try HoloISO (community edition of SteamOS) in order to get an environment that’s already setup for you. You don’t even have have to permanently install it. It should be able to boot up to it from an external drive and play the game from there.
It’s not no work to do that, but if you really want to play…
Halo 1 is the most buggy of all the Halo MCC games unfortunately.
I know that disabling the enhanced graphics for it improves performance/bugs a lot for that specific game in the package.

Update: Most issues were fixed through updates, I guess we just wanted to play in a really unfortunate time.
The locking up problem is related to a DLL mismatch when attempting #Windows/#Linux crossplay. In short: Copy your Windows friends’
ucrtbase.dll
from both theSystem32
and theSysWOW64
folders to your Windows folder in #Steam’scompatdata
folder and you’re good to go!We had a great time playing last night.
I’ve had a generally pleasant experience with the game. All the issues I came across–friends not being able to join matches, lag while on multiplayer–was because of cross-platform issues, one of us was on the MCC version while another was in the original release version, or my own poor internet connection.
I had some issues in coop, but we managed to finish all the games.
