Maybe for now, but as soon as more people switch to Windows 11 or Microsoft apps that constantly show you ads and are basically spam / adware themselves, Linux will get more appealing.

Microsoft is unfortunately learning from social media companies. Not only do you PAY for the product, you are also the product, and get your personal info stolen and get served ads even while you pay.

It’s getting to the point where I’m seriously eyeballing Mint again, or Kubuntu. And I’m the kind of person that’s generally too lazy to even dual boot anymore.

  • Sad, because I was a fan of them and bought all their games from Saint’s Row 1 all the way to Gat out of Hell (although not in chronological order) and got Agents of Mayhem for free somewhere, but think they’ve made some bad moves lately.

I think it all started going downhill from Agents of Mayhem, and them screwing up with the reboot of Saint’s Row was probably the nail in the coffin. I wish they’d just made Saint’s Row 5 instead, with wacky time travel shenanigans and a more polished set of superpowers.

At the point where they decided to “reboot” to something old school and grittier (TOO old school, imo) they really didn’t get what their fanbase wanted, and what new players who’d only heard of and experienced Saint’s Row 4 would get excited about.

They could’ve probably taken Saint’s Row up to 6 entries if they’d just iterated on the formula from 4 and possibly Gat out of Hell (I wouldn’t know, I got distracted and didn’t play it after I bought it, ironically). Similar to how United Front Games (the developer of Sleeping Dogs) could’ve probably stayed in business if they’d just made Sleeping Dogs 2 instead of that horrible “free to play” multiplayer asset flip of some of the least interesting elements of Sleeping Dogs 1.

Honestly, probably the only way to save the Environment and Democracy. Too much power in the hands of the few leads to perpetual effective monarchy. It’s why the Founding Fathers were against large amounts of inherited wealth, particularly inherited wealth that creates dynasties in perpetuity.

I know people don’t like the Founding Fathers that much lately, and I see why, but conservatives really don’t understand them, and deliberately misrepresent them, because not doing so would undercut all conservative “policies”.

World’s a mess because of inequality and the concentration of almost all wealth and power into the hands of a small amount of sociopaths. I honestly think the only way to solve this permanently is to cap the amount of wealth and power any individual or family can have.

  • Jesus has always been fairly liberal and borderline to actually socialist. He literally said rich people are more likely to go to hell because they cause problems for the poor by not helping them, and told someone rich that it’s not good enough to be a nice person, but to actually follow him, that he had to donate to charity.

He also hated and actively fought with organized religion, and especially profit-driven organized religion. People say stuff like “What would Jesus do.” but he made himself a whip and used it to chase people out of a synagogue and flipped tables because they were trying to profit off of religion like they were an extortionate business.

Hell, even the messianic prophets like Isaiah are very socialist. I would honestly say that parties like one of the Christian Socialist parties would better fit his stated ideologies than any conservative party. People have the wrong view about Jesus because Republicans and similar parties misrepresenting him, but he HATED people like the Republicans and Mega-churches.

Jesus was all like, “Love you enemies and be kind to those who use you.” but then turned around and said stuff like, “You brood of vipers, you are sons of your father the devil, and how can you be saved from the fires of hell?!” to the leaders of the church at the time. Which shows you how much he hated and was angry at them, that he didn’t even try to reconcile with them, which is why they assassinated him later.

Note than I’m not Christian (anymore) but I spent a long time as one and I learned a lot, and the biggest think I learned is that Republicans are not only not Christian, they actively misrepresent Christ and everything Christianity is about.

Like Omegaman said, it’s a dumb name, but it basically refers to “different” people getting forced into more polluted environments, along with the really cold and hot areas that are more likely to suffer catastrophic disasters from climate change.

For example, Native American and Black people being forced to live in areas near dirty factories that have high rates of cancer. And if they try to move to places that are cleaner, they usually get turned down when they try to buy or rent properties for various made up reasons.

Studies have been conducted where if someone in a group like that gets even 1 White (or sometimes Asian) roommate, they suddenly get magically approved to rent that apartment in a clean area.

  • Before Trump, I would have agreed. But after all the shit he pulled, his support amongst minorities he actively persecuted actually INCREASED by 2020. If anything, seeing shit like this all the time from people like this just normalizes it and makes people desensitized to it.

Stuff like this has to be rare and heavily condemned by a large amount of charismatic and popular people for it to be stopped and not become everyday business. I want less people like this and for them to be taken down faster.

Plus, the more people behave like this openly with few or no consequences, and in the mainstream media no less, the more emboldened people like him become and the more overt they become with their actions. For example: hate groups like the Proud Boys and 3 percenters used to be too scared to be as blatant and public as they are now, but now White Supremacy is loud and proud.

  • Yep, watermarked memes (and watermarked most things in general) are a scourge on the internet. I stopped following a Youtube channel that’s mostly playthrough’s of old fighting games because he suddenly decided one day to add an annoying (and ugly) watermark to the corner of ALL of his videos including the old ones.

Luckily, I’d found a similar one who was actually better at playing the fighting games themselves. I switched to that dude instead.

  • Too true. What’s bonkers is that rules on this vary state by state. You move across state lines, and sometimes it feels like you’re in an entirely different country. I used to favor “States’ Rights” and flexible, empowered local governments who could respond to nearby challenges more surgically than a larger, more lumbering government bureaucracy further away.

Looking back, I see that now that I was naive, and that what I had was an ideal, and wasn’t the reality. Republicans always seem to turn “States’ Rights” and “Local Authority” into a way to flout sensible Federal laws and do horrible shit like this instead of what they claim to be doing.

  • Not so sure about that, I feel like average people are waking up to technological bullshit like this more and more every year. Yeah there’ll still be an overly high amount of idiots, but I’ve learned that even older people can change and question things like this.

You can only get so many “We’re giving you 2 free years of identity theft protection because we got hacked and your personal information got stolen.” from big companies like your cell phone company, credit check company, etc. before you’re like “Hey, anything I put online can get stolen by criminals…”

Even if you’re a tech-unsavvy type. At some point the light bulbs turns on and you put 2 and 2 together.

  • GOP’s good at brainwashing stupid and / or dysfunctional people. It’s also good at attracting one issue voters who only care about guns, abortion, immigration, low taxes, etc.

Many people (if not most) are not that smart or caring. If you give them the one thing they want, they’ll support you. Many people (if not most) are also bigots, and hate one group or another and you won’t get them to change their minds by any means.

Republicans know this (they have psychological and media experts on their team who are smart, unlike their voting base) and use their knowledge to manipulate people with lies, and it works, just due to how human nature is.

Democrats also know this, which is why they don’t seriously fight Republicans by compromising on some of their principles or also pandering just enough to get elected in purple / weak red areas. It’s honestly just a power sharing agreement to keep things split 50 / 50 so the corpo donors can get what they want done while the average person gets distracted by the very public binary fight these 2 “parties” are always engaging in.

The only real answer is ranked choice voting and the formation of 2 additional parties. One that’s fiscally and environmentally liberal and socially conservative, and another that’s socially liberal, but fiscally liberal, and hopefully environmentally at least moderate.

People forget that most places on the internet are left-leaning or flat out liberal bubbles. Especially FOSS communities like Lemmy / Kbin. If you go out and engage people in real life, it’s easy to quickly realize that people will keep voting in climate denying, polluting jackasses so they can keep their guns, or make sure abortion’s illegal, etc.

Our best hope is young GOP voters who believe in climate change and want to do something about it, because they’re growing up in this world, and will have to live in it too. Hopefully that Hawaii fire made even the rich realize that shit like that could happen to them during their vacation, and it’ll make them give a shit. Anyhow, our best bet is to try to make deals with the next generation of Republicans, and also introduce ranked choice voting which can create parties and coalitions built around compromise and getting things done as opposed to ideological purity tests, which keep losing us the house and / or senate, even if we win the presidency.

  • Given how modern AAA games are and Bethesda’s recent track history, it’s not negative to be skeptical, it’s smart.

Especially since despite Microsoft watching over them and helping them to have the most “bug free launch in history” it’s still probably going to be a hot mess for weeks to a month after launch. I want to be pleasantly surprised, but I’m not getting my hopes up.

Plus, the recent release of Baldur’s Gate 3 with no microtransactions or season passes, etc. has gotten peoples’ standards up, and given that Microsoft paid a lot of money to buy Bethesda, we’re aware that they’re going to have to make that money back somehow, and will probably give into the temptation to do some really player unfriendly things to do it.

Bethesda’s been going all in on surprisingly expensive microtransactions for really tiny amounts of content, like in Fallout 4 and 76, and it wouldn’t be shocking for them to continue in that direction. People aren’t being mindlessly negative, they’re looking at current and past trends and making an educated guess about the future.
