  • I’ve experienced stuff like this.

I think the last time I tried being above and beyond type of host, had a bunch of people coming over for a big weekend. I thought I do something really special and make steaks. But this wasn’t just going to be like any grilled steak no no no. These steaks were going to be prepped the night before and then sous vide. But before I even started this plan I reached out to everyone and said what I was planning to do and ask if there were any issues with it, any requests, etc. I describe to everyone and great detail what I was going to make. Not one person said anything other than the “sounds good”.

If you’re unfamiliar with sous vide the short of it is it takes a long time to cook. Generally it’s measured in hours I’d say. As such I need to cook all of the steaks at the same temperature for the same amount of time I don’t have the setup at home to do individual orders.

One of the individuals once they got here, asked if I could make them a hamburger instead. Like I was a fucking restaurant.

And another one slathered it with ketchup without even trying it without. Claimed it was overcooked and dry. 🤨

Thankfully everyone else thoroughly enjoyed their perfect steaks.

Other times I would buy up a bunch of stuff so we could have breakfast. Like a proper breakfast, not just a handful of carbs in calling it good. But people would wake up late despite knowing when breakfast was going to be on. And then say they weren’t hungry. And not 30 minutes out the door, talking about picking up something or swinging by somewhere to quick grab a bite.

  • Yep. Having to have requirements that doesn’t flow with people very well and requiring constant updates, people WILL find shortcuts. In the office, I’ve seen sheets of paper with the password written down, I’ve seen sticky notes, I’ve seen people put them in notepad/word so they could just copy paste.

This is made worse, because you have to go out of your way for a password manager, which means you need to know what that is. And you need a good one because there has been (and I’m going to generalize here) problems with some password managers in the past. And for work, they have to allow a password manager for that to even be an option. Which you then end up with this security theater.

  • Drinking is not the most important things in the world.

In the US for sure, teenagers start to idolize alcohol and eventually it becomes the pinnacle of cool for some. “Parties” end up revolving around just the alcohol and getting completely wasted. Trust me, you are not a cool, as charming, etc, as you think you are when drunk. And there’s are, absolutely people who will show up to these parties expecting to exploit drunk people.

I’m not telling you ‘NEVER DRINK!’… More like, you don’t need to try drinking a lifetimes worth of alcohol everytime there’s alcohol around you. 1 drink can be enough. And don’t hang out with people who push you to drink or don’t accept ‘no’ as an answer and try to peer pressure you into drinking.

  • My plan is either soon the lotto or die before retirement. Now, I’ve been in a corporate job for nearly 2 decades, putting money in a 401k and Roth IRA. But given the rate that the value of the dollar is just tanking and the cost of everything is skyrocketing, I honestly figure everything I saved will be worthless. I’ve had my AC off for months at this point, turned it off towards the end of winter early spring. The electric company is telling me that I’m at best on par with some of my neighbors with other neighbors using less than half. Insurance for the car is going up. I love when I ask about why are my rates so high, they blame other drivers and somehow that’s my problem. In 2017 my bill was $335. 7 years later it’s up to $634. Same vehicle, no accidents. $100 for groceries does not go very far anymore. I’m pretty sure there was a picture on Lemmy just the other day showing someone with a receipt buying the same stuff and it was like three times more now than it was just a few years ago.

Use one of those inflation calculators and between 2010 and 2024 we’re at 44%.

I still have more than two decades to go before my supposed retirement date. And I have no faith in our economy.

  • I like them. The big shows are a rare form of artistic expression. And even the stuff you can buy, is a form of fun you cannot get anywhere else.

Drone shows are boring. You can watch them on a screen and lose none of the experience. I mean, the first time you see it it’s interesting, but then you remember it’s just a bunch of drones, and your going to be stuck in traffic just so you can see a pixilated coke can or something. There’s nothing unique or special about the experience I feel. Unlike fireworks, while they can look fine on a screen (if recorded properly) but you can see the difference on someone’s face when you’re there. You see it, feel it, and smell it. It makes sense why humans have been doing this for hundreds of years.
