  • Don’t know what phone you have, but the default clock on my phone has a timer with different levels of alarm (beeping, vibrate, both, notification only).

I would assume phone wide notification is the better option, because then it always notifies you no matter if the app is open or not, allowing you to also use your phone for other stuff without stopping the timer.

I don’t know of such a FOSS app (but also didn’t know the concept), and honestly just don’t see why anyone would need it. Is hitting a reset button seriously such a deal breaker?

  • That is what this is though…set a timer for 30min, when I beeps look at something far away for 30s (roughly, exact time isn’t actually important) and then press the “reset timer” button. Repeat until you don’t want to anymore, and then just stop the timer.

Not every single small thing should be an independent app…

  • I’ve been through a couple of different setups and sizes over the years from 1gal to 10gal. I don’t even drink beer every day so a 5gal batch often lasts way beyond the timeframe I want to drink it.

I’ve settled on 2-5gal batch sizes now, and mostly do 2gal batches with the occasional 5gal if it’s for aging or specifically sharing. There’s not much to it in regards to scaling down, just use a recipe calculator to scale because it’s not linear. Dead space, volume of wort in hoses etc. of course have a much larger impact on smaller batches, so keep that in mind.

The hardest part for me is getting a setup that does both 2gal and 5gal well, I haven’t found a “one size fits all” setup yet. But what I have now can do medium-gravity 2gal batches to 5gal medium/high-gravity batches. If I want a 2gal batch <6% ABV it’s doable but not as easy or efficiency is complete shit.

  • For almost 100€ I can just get much more capable hardware with only marginally larger footprint (both physical and power). Unless I needed the pin IO, the pi is a bad deal. And then if youre just beginning you also need a case, SD card and power supply and suddenly that pi is almost 150€ (and still running a shitty 16gb SD card), making it a horrible deal. I got my NUC, 16gb of ram and 1tb NVME for the same price (before upgrades with the default 8gb ram and 120gb nvme it was 65€), if you’re planning on a miniature light weight home server setup, its just a no-brainer to not pick the pi.

And the zero doesn’t have the ability to use any peripherals except for a display.

  • This means that over a span of 20 years, even with perfect use, there is a 33% chance for a pregnancy

No this is completely inaccurate and wrong…there’s a 33% risk of a condom failing. You’d still have to time it with ovulation of the person you’re boinking for there to be a risk of pregnancy. And even then, having sex in the most optimal period isn’t even a guarantee of pregnancy, far from it.
