I think so much about it is awesome (visuals, design of ships and sets, music, etc.) but maybe due to lack of repeated exposure to the movies as a child I don’t feel much about them. The modern movies were especially meh, since they all feel like they are trying to recapture the feeling of people who saw the originals in the cinema in the late 70s and 80s, but without doing anything new. I did quite enjoy the Fallen Order game and will probably play the follow up at some point too though.

I think there is a sweet spot when the cereal has absorbed a bit of milk and softened, but still has a little crunch, and the milk has absorbed some flavour from the cereal. However, if you leave it too long, you’ll end up with a soggy mass, which is shit. It also depends on the cereal a bit. I think nice muesli or granola usually needs a bit more softening than a lighter cereal like corn flakes or coco pops, but the latter do benefit from turning the milk sweet or chocolatey when left to soak.

Of course, like everything else in this world, we are destined to fight over it as if there are only two choices; maximum soggy and maximum crunchy.

I am very excited for Pop OS to get the new Cosmic desktop. Not really a specific feature but an entirely new DE that is quite different from the others and built from the ground up in Rust. Hopefully the first version won’t be totally broken and full of bugs!

I can’t really argue with that. Downloading large files while on the move is going to be very unreliable, and you also don’t want it to happen on your mobile data. I guess I can also see why some of you guys are paranoid about things making the machine overheat, or an unscrupulous OS vendor using the feature to spy on users. Windows Update was one of the worst experiences I had with an OS trying to force my hand, and the thought it could “upgrade” when you think the machine is off would make it even worse.

I was probably just annoyed that my laptop gets hot when the lid is closed and wondered why it can’t just do whatever the hell its doing more efficiently, and partly jealous of the way Apple seem to be able to implement all these nice features properly, but Microsoft just changes the wallpaper and whether app windows have curves on the corners or not in each update of Windows. Perhaps it’s time to try Linux again now I’m not forced to use software that is Windows only.

Fair enough, but I hope it would be something that is able to be enabled or disabled by the user and easily configured to avoid using too much power or data. I was just unsure of why PC laptops seemed to apparently lack the ability to sip power when not in heavy active use, such as when the lid is closed. It’s not the electricity bill, but the battery running out when not on AC power, or the laptop getting hot and generally being inefficient when it’s supposed to be a mobile device that bothers me about just having it keep working as normal with the lid closed.

I wonder if Valve will try to implement it in Steam OS for the Steam Deck’s successor, as a lot of people complained about the lack of downloading while asleep after the Deck was launched. It would still need cooperation in hardware I assume, but they were able to get resuming games working, so it doesn’t seem like an insurmountable problem if there is enough desire from both gamers and Valve.

Intel did make efficiency and power cores separate parts of their CPUs a few years ago, and I wonder if AMD’s can do something similar. Perhaps if Intel and AMD would work with Linux Kernel developers and Microsoft on this feature we could see “power nap” like functionality in the future. Personally I’d like if whatever we had on PC was a bit more configurable than power nap seems to be though, allowing users to set allowable power budget, battery saving conditions and exactly which tasks can run in this mode as well as some power tracking features like on phones to see which apps are using the most.

Not sure about Google Assistant, as I don’t use it, but for driving navigation I love the British female voice. She sounds ditzy when saying “turn left”, and like some kind of SM mistress when she says “turn right”. I love it. Despite this, I would swap her for a thick Scottish male accent in a heartbeat.

Honestly I try to only use the subscription feed because the home feed is addictive. I installed the unhook addon to block as many recommendations and other algorithmic things as possible, and try to just search when I want to find a particular thing.

However, sometimes I find myself running out of ideas and just disabling unhook and watching a few things from the home feed before reenabling it and going back to subscriptions only. I think if I also disabled ublock, youtube would be infinitely less addictive, since it would shove ads in my face constantly, and I’d soon get fed up.

Religions are unlikely to change substantially, I imagine they’ll just find some way to explain the existence of aliens that fits their existing scriptures and world view.

I think it’s that in the US, UK and many other countries, cycling is just not convenient for normal people as a form of everyday travel due to the way many cities are designed, resulting in the type of cyclists you see generally being younger, braver people commuting, and those who cycle as a hobby or for fitness. In countries where cycling is a convenient means of transport, such as the Netherlands and parts of Asia, there is a much wider variety of people on bikes, including mothers with children, old men riding with their pet dog in the basket, and even motorists will probably spend some time on a bicycle, as it might be a convenient way to get around their neighbourhood or pick up some groceries.

I think that this makes it a lot easier to create a stereotype of cyclists in places like the UK, where the mainstream rightwing press writes regular hit pieces of cyclists, as the image of “the cyclist” is easier to imagine as “the other” for a larger portion of the population.

The vision seems like an exclusive tunnel for Tesla owners rather than a viable form of transport. Actually, I’m not really sure what it is anymore, since there appeared to be a weird one that was basically a Tesla tunnel, and another that had maglev capsules or something. Not sure either seems like the best idea ever, but I doubt decent trains will ever exist in the US, so perhaps it’s better than nothing.

I’ve always gotten around by bicycle as where I’ve lived it’s always been the easiest form of transport and I never felt that I wanted to have a car. Around 30 I was thinking it might be nice to move to the countryside, and for that I’d probably need to be able to drive, so I learned to drive. Some of the things I learned at driving school made me feel a lot more empathy for motorists actually, since I realised that sometimes I ride in their blind spot, or make drastic manoeuvres that could perhaps be alarming to them, so I think it improved my ability to cycle safely. Conversely, as I walk and cycle nearly all the time, as a driver I’m very careful around pedestrians and cyclists and always give cyclists plenty of space when overtaking.

To be honest, here in Kyoto, most people are not total assholes, and they probably still ride bicycles around their neighbourhood, so it’s not considered an elitist or hipster mode of transport. I think this really helps everyone consider other road users as humans, regardless of the mode of transport. There are definitely still complete wankers around, of course, but I don’t sense much aggression from any road users most of the time.
