I went a different way to this.

I smoked for about 15 years, i used rolling tobacco and would get through 30-40grams in 4 days, im not sure what the conversion rate is but i was smoking easily 10-20 rollups a day. (Never really counted)

I tried to swap to vaping a few times but always fell back. I tried stopping cold turkey multiple times but always ended up going back even harder and smokk g more every time.

Eventually a friend got me on to a new vape, one of thos big cloudy ones that makes you look like a prick. But it had just the right feel, had good flavours and low nicotine content. (Lowest you could get).

At first i was vaping alot, loads. But the number of opportunities i had to vape was the same as when i smoked. So i would be beholden to that schedule daily. This meant my jicotine intake was drastically reduced and didnt leave me ratty because i was still getting some.

It seemed that as the days passed i was missing opportunities to vape more and more, until one day, i worked straight through without even thinking about it. Its been almost a year now and i just dont miss them at all.

I think that everyone is different and half the reason so many people struggle to quit based on advice from others is that we are all different, we smoke different amounts, we smoke for different reasons and different lengths of times and we all have our own tolerance to maintaining our will power.

For some, the decision to quit is enough and our resolve will be strong, for others we need weening and gradual reduction in order to quit. And everything in between.

What works for you or me may work for millions of people, but not for millions more. The best we can do is pass on our anecdotal experience like we both have and let people do what works for them.

  • Why dont you pay him any rent? Houses are expensive and you are using electricity, water, gas etc. Im sure he would appreciate it if you just decided to pay your way.

Edit: Since im being downvoted i want to add some context.

The tone of the message im responding to (or at least the way it read to me) was that this person is taking advantage of their dad. They said

Why wouldn’t I take the deal to have no rent while I work full time at a decent job so I can pay off my student loans? Sounds stupid to move out at least for me right now

It doesn’t come off like they have discussed and agreed on anything with their dad.

It sounds like they are earning a decent wage and haven’t even considered getting their own place.

It sounds like they want to milk their dads generosity for everything they can so they can have an easier life.

Now ABSOLUTELY i cant be sure and could be completely wrong. But that’s how it reads. Like they don’t give a shit and are acting selfishly and dont even see how its selfish.

To be clear, i dont think the dad should impose rent or any kind of fee on them. I know how hard it is to get a home as a young person, and i likely won’t be asking my kids for rent. I just found the attitude i perceived in that post to be asinine.

Or just dont label it. Labels keep us in boxes and boxes cause stress when we inevitably find out we dont fit in the box.

I came up with this idea err metaphor? Thought experiment? Anyway

Think of the shape of a 6 point star. If you are star shaped you will fit perfectly, if you are triangle shaped you will also fit, or if you are diamond shaped or a circle or a hexagon or many many other shapes.

But only a star fits perfectly.

(Heres a crude drawing of it)

You can spend years in the star box thinking its a perfect fit before you realise theres something different, something not quite right and you suddenly see that you were a triangle the whole time.

Just let go of the labels and be you, its alot more spacious outside of the box, and you dont have to be a certain way to fit in.

Literally, the second sentence of the post says that she wasnt teying to show it was better for the environment. She was showing how impractical it was.

Then you step in and say “but her team was flown over the atlantic”.

Greta: im not trying to make a point about private jets being bad for the environment and boats being a good alternative by sailing instead of flying

You: but you didn’t prove that sailing is a good alternative to private jets by sailing instead of flying.

    Right.
