Nonviolence is an inherently privileged position in the modern context. It ignores that violence is already here; that violence is an unavoidable, structurally integral part of the current social hierarchy; and that it is people of color who are most affected by that violence. I make no cleans about the stances of this artist; I just saw this strip years ago.

A lot of my head canon around this and the notable lack of automation prevalent in Starfleet: it’s a futuristic, post-scarcity jobs program. Yes, it’s about exploration and rendering assistance and all that. But it gives people something to do, a way to serve the whole. Picard said as much to Geordi when Scotty was aboard. I’ve of the many things Starfleet does is give people a sense of usefulness.

Honestly, I count using the four fingers for 1-4, close the fingers and extend thumb for five, then extend each finger again for 6-9.

The right hand counts tens and works the same way. Can count to 100, and it’s pretty intuitive. It’s like if positional notation was discovered way earlier.

She would have been good IMO. However, then she would have been saddled with the inconsistent writing, and thus be Star Trek’s face of murder and genocide.

Uh, no. The phone was made by workers. Workers laid the infrastructure and maintain the networks. Workers run the power plant and maintain that infrastructure as well.

Profit happens when the business takes more money than is needed to Do The Thing. That money is then given to people who (generally) have nothing to do with Doing The Thing. These people then take their extracted value profits, and increase their holdings so they can get more.
