Aiming for a future in IT security, I find this branch of computer science somewhat ironic. You basically work to make your future work harder, i.e. you make things more secure, making your job of finding vulnerabilities even more difficult. Still a sucker for it, though

We need an open source smart tag. I recently researched how the landscape has changed and, as an android user, still nothing good in available. I’m not sure if I remember right, but Google’s find my device was supposed to be open source or at least open spec? Might be worth looking into how easy it would be to code a lil firmware for this network myself. As much as I’d love a tag for things I cannot lose, the current options are throwing money away for no actual useful tracking (Samsung), forfeit your privacy (Tile, perhaps others), sell your soul (Apple).

Yeah, I take my laptop with me daily for university work. I don’t need the huge processing power of my gaming computer. If I need to run some expensive code, then I put it on my 24/7 server, but that is rarely needed. The powerful gaming computer serves, well… gaming purposes.

The generative fill has been around for way longer than the AI craze.

I used Joplin for up to 8 hours daily for half a year (university) before switching to Obsidian, too. As far as I know, Joplin lets you store the notes as files, too, but you need to set it up that way from the start.

Still, I found Obsidian to be much more pleasant and - ironically - easier to modify (by writing plugins) than Joplin.

I believe your statement might contain a slight imprecision, as a histogram is a bar graph displaying the frequency distribution of some value. Did you perhaps mean to say “homogram”?

I find it unfortunate that the same line has different colours on each end. It would be much nicer to visionary see the path the lines take.

“Never” is a massive understatement. Especially in big cities, say Paris itself, it’s a nightmare to drive a car compared to just using public transportation. Even outside of cities it can be much nicer to relax on a smooth train ride rather than have to focus on driving the entire time.

Oh yeah, no, I don’t think anything virtual will ever make a conversation with a headset on seem natural. The best form factor I can picture is some sort of smart glasses, smart contact lenses, etc. Basically, as little obstruction as possible. Doubt it will happen anytime soon, though it is a shame development was stalled after Google Glasses’ flop.

I wonder how it compares to staring down at one’s phone though. At least in an AR scenario, you’re looking straight ahead right? I can both see how that could improve your spatial and social awareness, but I can also see how you could tunnel vision on your content just as easily.

Gotta, say, the barrier between you and other people by having a headset obscure most of your face, sure feels strange, as far as human interactions go. They really haven’t innovated at all in that regard, despite the promises of the virtual eyes at the front. I can’t see the technology becoming ubiquitous in daily life, until it’s nearly seamless.

I’m in the niche of niches by using vsc with a vim plugin while being a dvorak user. I rely on vim’s langmap feature to get anywhere, but people implementing vim emulators blissfully ignore accessibility like that. So I went and implemented langmap in vsc’s vim plugin myself. It has minimal intervention into the existing codebase and a bunch of other people have been wishing for this for years. Yet, when it comes to merging… Silence.

Ditched reddit the moment 3rd party apps stopped working. I’m rooting for Lemmy to grow. I especially n hope that nieche communities feel less dead in the future.
