  • Started college at 2020 January. Information technology. I did well during the time I was there but whole covid thing just made me hate my school and like I needed change.

We were going back and forth remote and in person classes, both of which were really bad in terms of quality of the teaching and I felt like if I am mostly learning from external sources and teaching sucks.

I refused to attend in person classes due to covid risks despite it being kind of mandated so I managed to negotiate that I just study on my own and take the exams. And my grades didn’t even get worse.

I’m not the type of person to keep doing something I feel like is useless for a paper that might give me slight advantage for getting a job. Education itself is free in my country but I just hated getting more and more student debt to cover other my living costs.

I decided "fuck this I’m just gonna get a IT job and teach myself and that’s what I did. I wouldn’t say that I’m at my dream job now but I feel confident I am able to progress on this career just fine despite dropping out.

  • Great thread, although I tbh don’t even want alternatives for most of them.

    Lemmy, sure.

Discord, would be nice but until I get my friends and servers to move to something else, not gonna work.

Facebook, I don’t ever want to use anything like it even if it was open source.

Mastodon, I don’t want to use it despite being fedoverse cause it tries to be like Twitter and I hate Twitter.

Pixelfed, I don’t really want to use anything like instagram and even if I did, not relevant until people I want to follow use it since I wouldn’t post myself.

Tictoc, I would rather scoop of my eyeballs with rusty spoon than use it, no matter if it would be federalized.

Others not mentioned I don’t care enough to know how they work. Still, I support the sentiment of making fedoverse alternatives for things, although I personally only need lemmy and discord to get my dopamine fix.

  • Yeah, for some I might be hardcore leftist radical, and generally hold many anticapitalist, anticonsumerism sentiments. However reading opinions of these people, I can’t see how world order they are proposing would be any better for anyone, except for those on the top, just like we have now. I also hate the assumption that communist society would be inherently more ecological than capitalist one, or more eqalitarian, like these people seem to think.

Reading pro soviet stuff is also infuriating for me as someone living in Finland, usually shit takes that totally oversimplify history of my country. Same thing with anti NATO stuff, I am not generally too fond of NATO but I am still OK with Finland joining cause, uuum have you notice there is fascist country right next to us that seems to have no problem attacking neighbouring countries, that are not in NATO.

Unfortunately this kind of nuance is impossible to these chronically online people, who just make up shit to justify their agenda. They just think we will have leftist revolution and then everything will be alright, instead of considering for one second how all this would play out in real life.

  • Not my town, but there is a junk shop in main railway station, (sells clothing, shit like t-shirts with weed prints, pipes, random little trinkets). I can only assume rent is very expensive in such a central location, and I really can’t think of any way how that place is profitable. I only visited once as a teen since they sold us weed pipes even though I was underage. -There is a actual tobacco shop nearby, with much better selection. -There is never any customers -None of the products sold are very valuable, so they would have to sell lot of them to make profit -If you really wanted to buy cringe t-shirt, there is many shops for that around as well, all of which are well known compared to this one

Many business have gone under during the years in that location, replaced with others, but somehow this one place has been there over 10 years.
