I’m not okay with it either but I am not even remotely surprised that they harvest that amount of data. It’s why I deleted my account in like 2015 or 2016. The only way they make money is advertising and they can only do that by being more and more targeted. If you’re not paying for the product then you are the product.

Sorry, I was unclear there. I had my wording all fucked up.

There are two parts to the ‘nobody’ thing. The first is the word nobody and then the second is the silence after it. It’s to denote that no one anywhere had ever thought or heard a particular thing. Then another group comes in as part of the meme and asks that particular question. To turn the meme into a sentence it would be:

“Not a single living soul in creation had ever expressed this idea but suddenly, one day, a group of Star Trek fans asked something fucked up for the very first time.”

Whether it’s fucked up or interesting or whatever is denoted by the general context or feeling that the question/idea gives. In this case it would be fucked up.

Listen, I appreciate all that but if anything? That makes me even less likely to use Linux. I don’t want to use it because I said it is needlessly complex. Nothing about what you said dissuades me from that. If anything, it’s made worse by the fact the system is even more complicated than I thought necessary.

Then there’s convenience. You say that Linux Mint and such is for no hassle but then said that a bunch of stuff isn’t Linux supported so you have to work around it with Wine. That’s not convenient. Neither is having to do research on which version of Linux will fit my needs.

What I want is a system that does what I tell it to do, is streamlined, is intuitive, is simple and is universally supported. Linux doesn’t meet a single one of those criteria for me. I’d say does what I tell it to, which it does, but only after I have to spend 5 minutes googling how to do it.

Well, older versions of windows still exist so it would be years before put into the position of having to consider a subscription. Even then? I would rather that than Linux. There is literally nothing that Linux offers that I find outweighs the enormous downsides of the OS. Those being that very little of what I use/am interested in has any Linux support, Linux being needlessly complicated for the average/casual user, and it being such an enormous departure from windows that the time I’d have to spend learning the OS wouldn’t be outweighed by benefits.

Lemmy.world has defederated from Lemmy.ml but even before I moved over here, I had been avoiding them on my old instance. Why? They were removing posts with no notification and had banned me with no notification or warning. What was the post? A Jimmy Neutron meme. “This is my first gay character!” “Disney, this is your 14th first gay character”. My title said something like “It’s always the first in China when they’re removed before airing”. What was the reason? Rule 1 of the site as a whole. I talked with another very heavy poster and he had stuff removed as well with no warning. Also had a dicey conversation with an admin. Just gave up and started avoiding it. I don’t think I ever got permanently banned from there (although I did from Hexbear for ‘perjery’) but if I did I wouldn’t have cared much.

Yep. I’m more atheist. I’ll use whatever is most convenient for me and Linux has never fit that bill. Honestly I doubt it ever will.
