  • They are very precise, cover the whole french territory, are all in the same format, follow the same standards and the paper maps are not too expensive. There are topographical maps at a 1:25000 scale, and roadmaps at a 1:250000 scale. And these paper maps are as sturdy as they can be, my dad has been rocking some of them for almost his entire life.

I guess I just get too excited about state funded institutions that provide good service to the public and still exist in 2024. Them paper maps can really be a lifesaver when you’re hiking in the more remote parts of France though

  • I guess it could be construed as racist when it’s literally “master/slave”. But I have never seen it as a normalization of slavery because there usually is no value attached to the terms, it’s just describing the relation between them. And I don’t think acknowledging that a slave generally doesn’t have much say in doing what their master tells them is racist in itself or endorsing/normalizing slavery.

But also, I am white, and there are other terms we can use that can describe this kind of relation just fine, so, whatever. I just get mildly annoyed when some stuff that was working perfectly fine gets deprecated just to change these terms and I have to adapt to it.

  • Personally, Veritasium is out of that list for me due to some of his more recent videos. He still has some good content but I really disliked that “rods from God” video where it feels like he’s basically doing the same thing as the “How Ridiculous” guys and trying to disguise it as science communication. And the (admittedly few) ones where he’s basically disguising advertising as his regular content.

I nominate BobbyBroccoli to take his spot.

  • “Twink” is also an old MMORPG term that designates characters specially optimized to play in the lower pvp brackets with the biggest advantage possible.

For example, back in my days, in wow, a lot of people would play level 19 characters (Levels brackets for pvp were 10-19, 20-29 etc) with the best pvp gear for this level and enchants that no one in their right mind would pay for on a character that was not meant to stay stuck at this level forever.

A non-geared level 19 hunter in a battleground was already scary if you were around level 10, but these mfs could basically only be defeated by other twinks.

  • Also net weight vs gross weight. I think there’s a law that regulates this where I live (France) because it’s always specified but I don’t see it here.

I assume OP is from Canada because I see English and French on the packaging. I lived there for a few years and was losing my mind over this kind of stuff the entire time. Prices never include taxes even though you basically always have to pay them, price per pound/gallon/unit is never displayed either and they really try to swindle you with this, I constantly saw “family sized” or whatever packages that actually cost more per pound than the regular version when I did the math. So I’m not surprised.
