[UK] I carry phone and keys. I pay for everything with my phone. Twerking on street corners as a Gen X for cash isn’t profitable anymore.

If I know I need ID, eg. Costco, I have my old fashioned wallet in my jacket pocket. I keep meaning to set up the Costco ID on my phone. Doesn’t happen.

The number of times I open or reach for my wallet is maybe twice a month. Frigging barber still wants to be paid in cash, and all the 20th century banks and their ATMs are closing … [so now they have 20th century tech and no way to interact efficiently with the public. Haha!].

I’m very increasingly anarchist as I get into my sixth decade - UK 2020s feels like 1970s again so screw the useless thieving politicians - so I should be actively pro-cash but I’m actually more pro-crypto pro-barter (especially pro barter) in the real world. Long ago l learned that if I have physical cash, I piss it up the wall, but I’m careful with credit card cash. No idea why. I never have more than £30 in notes on me; that’s enough money to buy a Costa coffee for you yanks.

Sadly, that means I can’t give cash to the odd homeless. Not too many homeless with contactless readers. Maybe that’ll be rabbit-in-headlights Kier’s big thing: contactless readers for the destitute veterans that the armed services and government abandoned (I came of age around Falkland conflict).

The net runs on numbers. The numbers have to be translated into/from the DNS name to the numbers.

Nominating a DNS name as internal is doesn’t change the fact that we still have to, at some stage, find the (local) network mask that that corresponds to.

What am I missing?

Update: I’m not sure I formed my question correctly because I’m none the wiser. That’s my fault, I think.

First micro was an Acorn Atom around 1981. First home built PC in around 1988.

Used Windows from the very early days of 3.0 when (Xerox?) Gem became the less useful competitor.

Around Win 2003, XP era they started taking useful functionality out or burying it and taking the useful KB articles off the net.

About that time I wanted to look at VoIP and stumbled into VoIP@home which was hosted by CentOS and I, initially, ran in a Win 2000 VM.

Not long after MS bought Hotmail and found that Windows servers couldn’t keep it going and they had to replace it with UNIX. Maybe that timeline isn’t quite right.

Started transitioning away from Windows that that stage and am so glad I did. I think Win 12 will just consist of a start button and everything else will require daily subscription.

From being a Win fanboy to just wishing he’d have taken the whole thing to that Epstein island with him and left it there.

Have one of the last decent HP printers.

I’ve gone from being able to easily and happily recycling my laser printer cartridges to HP - print off the label and send free post - to going through some convoluted account sign-up bullshit pictures of my inside leg whilst upside down. Yeah not happening.

Eventually my toner is going to be too expensive to support and the printer scanner will break.

When you’re naming a file, you can’t use anything else.

It’s not really about the cost but the initial outlay. I don’t want to pay out that kind of money for a test. Not that I don’t believe you etc etc.

TBF I haven’t been to the OEM website to see if I can get a tester! So almost definitely my bad.

Burnt myself recently on a traditional deo having tried to stay away from Aluminium based one; I think it held it too close on this occasion. I’m old and it shouldn’t have happened. Had many small blood blisters under my arms but internally. Horrible. Anyway, it seems to have changed me. Since then I’ve been sensitive to many deodorants.

Currently looking for something else that works, hopefully Nuud is it. Thank-you.

If it runs Windows it’ll run Linux almost certainly. The cheaper you go, the more likely you’ll have lower priced or older components for WiFi, Bluetooth etc which may mean that you have to dig some firmware binaries out to get the whole thing running.

If you can take a USB stick with you of a typical Rescue distribution, and can boot it up, you’ll know what will and won’t work easily. The bits that don’t work may need some minor fiddling. As I said, there are usually walkthrough blogs etc around.
