  • It will never happen.

No one’s gonna buy a $30 cable rated for 100w and 120fps video to charge their phone. They’re gonna buy the $5 one at the gas station that’s only rated for low power charging.

No manufacturer is gonna put the hardware to safely deliver 100w in their phone charger. They’re gonna do the cheaper lower power option, and people already say the ones that do include this functionality are greedy price gougers for charging more than the $5 low power charger at the gas station.

How soon before manufacturers start stripping those high power delivering ports out of laptops because they raise the risk of permanent damage under a failure too high for the market/brand to bear?

It’s no fun to be laughing at the people who all wanted a usbc-only world and are now having to live in it but here we are.

  • No, it’s not like that at all.

The op didn’t ask for a phone recommendation and I didn’t recommend instead that they use a laptop or desktop.

The op said they want to donate to a Linux phone because one day they believe they’ll be able to use a Linux phone. They want to pick the right one to give money to so it’ll have the best effect towards that end.

I said they shouldn’t do that because they can already use a Linux phone and there are tons of other Linux based projects where the money will go much farther.

We ought to be looking at this from a completely different perspective though: op is trying to maximize the value their donation has, and that’s a bummer. They should just donate to the one they like and not worry about effectiveness.

  • Don’t do this.

Android is already Linux on a phone and it’s bad.

Donate to normal Linux on computers. There is an ever expanding mess of packages that need to be updated, fixed, hosted, maintained, streamlined, back ported and generally massaged into functionality with whatever goofy distro you pick.

Donate to Linux on computers instead.

  • It is a powerful insult that the recipient most likely doesn’t comprehend the extent of.

The composer of the music in cowboy bebop, yoko kanno, is one of many in the ecosystem of Japanese commercial production who specializes in legally distinct versions of existing songs.

That’s not a value judgement, it’s just what that environment is like. Music needs to be fitted to the video, not the other way around and animation frames are wildly more expensive than live action video frames. You can make the sopranos intro fit the beats of Alabama 3 by leaving the overwhelming majority of the footage that was shot to make it on the cutting room floor. You don’t do that with animation because it’s absurdly expensive and every frame was made to lead into another one. Cutting without thinking about how many fps the sections you’re trying to join are would be incredibly jarring.

It’s also much cheaper to go with the relatively fixed cost of hiring a composer and band to make and perform the “original” songs than it is to negotiate with at least four different rights holders and then pay a percentage. Since animation is getting big distribution no matter what, there’s no benefit to the possibly low cost in dollars (or yen) of the residuals on a flop when you’re sending it out weekly to millions of homes.

Almost every song in cowboy bebop is a copy of an existing one with enough changed to dodge copyright. I hesitate to say all, because I can’t put originals to a few of em, but it would fit kannos M.O. and I believe that they’re all copies.

So it’s like someone listened to and internalized the musicality of pale imitations of music that fits into a much greater and broader context and has more breadth, depth and value, but refuses to engage with music beyond that.

It’s the equivalent of saying someone only listens to jingles. Jingles are interesting and there’s a real drought of recordings of em and information about em. More people should collect and catalog commercial music like that so it doesn’t just get thrown away, but if someone only listened to jingles their understanding and conception of music and people would be deeply warped.

It’s that old sci fi story of the aliens who received television and radio broadcasts without context and then came to earth expecting that world, but weebs did it to themselves.

Here’s the kicker: I like the music in cowboy bebop and I think kanno is incredibly talented. But that’s a brutal insult and to say anything else is just saying you shit your pants at recess too. Maybe it makes the first pants shitter feel better, but you gotta tighten up the ol’ turd cutter.

  • I replied to another comment with this, but Debian 12(stable, bookworm) and 13(testing, trixie) are affected by this but 12(stable, bookworm) has a patch out in the security repo.

If you wanna know wether or not you’re affected,

    apt list libc

will show your version and the one you want is 2.36-9+deb12u4

    If you don’t have that,

    apt update && apt upgrade

    will straighten you out

13(testing, trixie) has 2.37, but it’s not fixed yet.

E: Edited to use apt list instead of apt show.

  • Good and Cheap is a free cookbook with a broad collection of recipes that can be made from stuff that’s available when you have a grocery store or something around. It has a bunch of useful tools like an overview of what kitchen equipment to buy, a growing season chart for cheap veggies and a breakdown of cost for each recipe.

The whole thing was written to fit the us food stamp budget and if you get tired of the pdf and want physical copy, the publisher will donate one to a family on food stamps when you buy one for yourself.

The recipes are all pretty generalized and can be applied to lots of different ingredients.

  • First things first: I will never vote for joe Biden for any office. Never have and never will. You’re not gonna convince me to.

With that out of the way, you can use the fact that a party which doesn’t line up perfectly with your values needs your support to get them to take action that you want. It’s not cruel or a betrayal. If you think there’s something the democrats can be doing better, now’s the time to get it because they need you.

There’s not a single reason to just vote blue no matter who to use a turn of phrase from years past. If you think Biden and the democrats are doing a good job then push them to go even farther. If you think they’re doing a bad job but better than a different party, push them to do a better job.

What’s great about using elections as a time to try to get concessions is it gives people who feel left out by parties a chance to be brought in. If the party makes good on their promises then they can get voters for life!

Doesn’t a better democrat party with new support sound better than slogging out to the polls to vote against someone?
