So teens learn about Tor & VPNs. This stuff doesn’t work. The higher you put the skills to get access, the more they will learn. Nothing motivates teens more than access to adult stuff. Maybe this is really a tech literacy policy.

Can it run problem bank apps? I need a bank auth app for work as the bank stopped fobs and it just would not run on LineageOS. It refused to run because “the phone is insecure”. I tried Magisk hiding stuff and MicroG, and a number of way of tricking methods. That’s why I ended up on GrapheneOS, as a compromise without feeling too compromised. Everything seams to think it’s on a normal Android phone, but I’ve sandboxed the Google tentacles. But it would be better if mandating OS wasn’t allowed. If I want to run a “insecure” phone, that’s my “problem”.

I can only speak of on Linux. If you know the disk is bad, clone it, with ddrescue, and fix the clone. But in future RAID and backup remotely. Also, next gen filesystems like ZFS and Btrfs for check sums and self healing and subvolumes with send/receive deltas between them.

I’m not giving you what I regard as my instances because I think that is combative. I don’t want combat, that’s the whole thing. I’m not really pro or anti this defederation, but I can see the problem and I’m interested in how it plays out. In it becomes a place of combat rather than debate, I’m simply leave. If there is no news or anyone to talk to, I will also leave.

If there is coordinated defederation, maybe it’ll give mods of the troll infested instances pause for thought, and make them clean house. Or not, and Lemmy bumbles along without ever hitting mainstream, until something else comes along. Maybe central instances set the tone of the whole thing, and here this is a mortal wound.

See that’s not my experience of the problem. They aren’t being polite. They are out right hostile. Staying calm, providing trusted source references, and remaining polite, just seams to enrage they further. They seam to want to have a slagging match, which is of no interest to me as I’m not 12.

I’m watching with interest what happens here. I left Reddit before for Voat for a while. It turned out that without policing (or maybe it was the type of policing) it turned into a toxic cesspit.

Policing of some kind is clearly import to human groups. In the real world, across the world and history, where is no law and order, you end up with war lords and drug lords, who setup their own rules. Take moderation away and online groups get consumed by trolls.

So I’m watching what happens with federated Lemmy with interest.

You mean a fork? Why not? A copyright assignment and relicensing dispute is what caused a LibreOffice to fork from OpenOffice. Forks is a great feature of FOSS and there are normal.

Best recent example I bumped into was OrcaSlicer it’s a fork of a fork of a fork, merging in some of a fourth fork.

My e-Berlingo is very basic. It can’t get remote update, it has to go to the dealship for them. I don’t think it has a data connection. Claims to has some, but you can turn it off and I bet it’s only for dealership download when it’s in for repairs. It can’t even keep time. It loses like a minute a week (which is the worse time keeping I’ve ever seen and I’m getting to be old now). So not doing NTP!

I count it’s basicness as a feature not a bug. I just use Android Auto (originally on a de-googled LineageOS and now GrapheneOS with Google sandboxes. I use Organic Maps).

That’s good, though I still think it’s a problem they exist. I mean a lot of apps are a webpage wrapped in an app anyway, so why not just a webpage and skip the platform dependence.

Increasingly lots of stuff won’t work without all of the Google services. Banking apps won’t run on root devices or anything odd they detect.

Even without that, I can say how seamless it is.

The main problem is political not technical. The market had been allowed to become a duopoly and too many critical things now need an app on an Android or Apple phone. The worse I know is banks needing an app for authentication for their online banking. No separate security device anymore, those are ewaste apparently.

Public EV chargers where you can only control them from an app.

Riding book at theme parks. The cases are growing. Even the app is just wrapper of hidden web page!

Frankly I think regulation is required to get competition in the market. Not the only tech one either. Why is it so hard for law makers to see monopoly in tech?

Those dependencies adenoid and no kept Upton date, unlike deb/rpm installed stuff. Best sandbox to not compromise your system. Also hope that sandboxing is done right…

For the UK, it doesn’t have house names/numbers, but streets + towns work fine.
