  • There’s one notice, and it’s in the System Settings app. And it’s a little red dot beside the iCloud section. That’s not really the same league as what Microsoft is doing, or Even Google’s nag to use Chrome across all their Web properties.

You’re right about the first-party apps that you can’t remove, but it’s also not the same as, eg, Edge where those apps are used constantly and your preferences are reset on every update.

On my Mac I set my browser to Firefox in 2018. It’s never reverted to Safari, not once, where Windows really wants me to use Edge and goes so far as to not just reset it periodically, but also direct start menu searches and in-app web links to an ms-edge: url instead of using the http handler.

Apple has problems, but this isn’t one of them.

Did you use the Debian edition of Mint? Debian doesn’t include a lot of proprietary drivers and/or firmware blobs with its standard edition.

I can’t say that’s the case here, but it’s possible that Mint is either using Debian as a base, or at least following the Debian Free Software Guidelines.

There’s usually a nonfree firmware deb you can use, post installation. If you can complete the install and connect to the internet via the 7480’s Ethernet port, you should be able to get the wifi card working.

  • So now that microplastics are the new hotness, industry is going to run the same plays they did when climate change became critical: blaming and shaming us for their mistakes, and trying to sell us more stuff to work around the problem they created.

I’d love a new washer and dryer, but I live in an apartment and don’t get a choice and I can’t buy a house because housing is now an investment vehicle. I’d love to hang out my clothes to dry, but because we’ve gutted healthcare, social services and housing, they get stolen by homeless and/or addicts. I’d love to not have to wash clothes as often, but I have to go into the office and look “presentable” because we can’t have commercial real estate lose value by having people work from home.

How about we stop shaming people and bust the proverbial balls of capitalism instead?
