I think this is more a case of the triangle inequality in metric spaces, as you don’t have to calculate any particular edge to see the shortcut, as well as that it applies to any even non-rectangular triangle.

It’s the default in Germany I think. At least it used to be, knew no one who had something different as a child. Just a bit less convenient to store as they’re a bit bigger.

Depends on what you wanna do. Also it’s a matter of preferences. For anything more complex than a simple letter or a table I’m using Latex. But although I love Latex, I must acknowledge that for some it’s not the right tool.
