My wife just got into Tetris and wants to play together. I have been bragging to her about how good I am at Tetris and now she wants to play together
We would like to play side by side on the TV, but we do not want any of that stuff where if person A does well, then person B gets random blocks.
Does something like this exist?
We could play on PC or on Switch.
Tetris Effect Connected is pretty decent and has multiple game modes, one of which doesnt send “garbage” to the other player.
Thanks. I will take a look at it 🙏
Probably not really fitting to your “these days” requirement, but I honestly loved Tetris on the Wii, which has a coop mode where you play on one big board.
*Edit: The exact name is “Tetris Party Deluxe” btw.
Thanks for the heads up. I am totally OK with emulation. In fact we tried the snes version, but that was not what we were looking for.
Then try the Wii game! :) The exact name is “Tetris Party Deluxe”.
Thanks! I’ll try to get it setup today.
Tricky Towers ist a nice competitive twist on classic Tetris.
A whole lot of fun for the whole family.
Thanks, I’ll show this to my wife 🙏
@worfamerryman Tetris Effect has a co-op mode and is one of the best versions of modern Tetris that you can get.
@worfamerryman Yeah, you share the board. If you are looking for side-by-side Tetris without the garbage pieces, the mode you want is Score Attack which Tetris Effect has two variations of (Modern Tetris style with holds and classic NES style Tetris). You play until someone tops out and whoever has the most points wins.
I believe the Puyo Puyo Tetris games also have this mode and a bunch of other versus modes, but most of them lean into sending garbage pieces.
Does that mean we work on the same board? I guess what we really want is to play single player tetris but on the same screen side by side.
The co-op modes are 3 vs 1 and 3 vs AI controlled boss. I only played the vs AI boss, and you all get separate boards until a specific event occurs. Then it merges and everyone gets to put their piece anywhere across the three boards. It only lasts for a little bit, and then the board splits again.
The PvP modes are called:
- Zone battle (incorporates their time-stopping mechanic)
- Score attack (standard Tetris, no interfering blocks for the player lagging behind)
- Classic Score attack (standard Tetris, but you don’t get hard drops or holds, and again, no interfering blocks)
One thing I found out is that if you want to play against the CPU, you can just load up a local match and add player’s twice on the same controller. The second “adding” will fill the rest with CPUs.
It’s available on both PC and Switch. However, from what I could find out, you need the Switch Online membership to play multiplayer online. But you haven’t mentioned an interest in that so it should fit your requirements really well.
It’s currently 50% off on both Steam and Nintendo eShop
Hope that helps!
Thanks, I will be playing local only. This sounds like a good deal.
The original is still my favorite. There are some awesome ROM hacks that provide competitive 2-player mode, while keeping the original rules, scoring and graphics.
I think Tetris effect has a ton of game modes like that, but I haven’t actually played, I’d just heard of it though classic Tetris videos. But I’d look at that
Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 lets you play challenge modes in multi-player wirh no garbage and is on the Switch. Probs your best bet!
