  • Addressing/preventing future review errors were clearly addressed in this video. I feel like if that was the only thing that came up in the last week then this wouldn’t really have blown up the way it has.

Unclear what has really changed with the workplace culture and employees being overworked. They’ve implemented a bunch of extra processes that is just going to take more time and work, not less. A couple of things Linus has brought to light in this video:

    • Most people “only” worked 9-10 hour days and that’s not including commute
    • Over time does happen and it’s when employees work more than that 9-10
    • WFH will be even rarer since people will be required to be at more in person meetings
    • They have plenty of money to keep going so the previous stinginess in video quality was really just greed?
    • “Less” videos will be posted but how many? Only time will tell
    • The intent was to become of a source of accurate data and reviews - they’re not just entertainment

The whole “our fans are the boss” attitude could really go sideways too given some of the fans track records of harassment… They really can not cultivate some in-house ethics with the 100+ people they have?

  • This is my concern as well. A charitable reading of this might be that their decision making team’s sense of knowing what is ethical and normal has been soo shaken that they’re uncomfortable with making those decisions without outside guidance. Given Terren has only been there for six weeks though, he should be able to provide outside insight on this. The non-charitable read is that this is all for show and they’re reaching out to see what the minimally acceptable most profitable line they can toe at the moment is.

  • It’s about the type of audience they want to attract moving forward. Is it the type that harasses a guy for legally buying a YouTube play button when administrative issues prevented him from getting his own until he committed suicide? Those are a large portion of the people that would have had a big problem with a humorless apology. Having your apology labelled as “generic” is not the worst thing in the world. I’m thinking Linus’s new label as ukulele boy might be worse

  • I don’t really know how you came to the conclusion that they want to do the right thing after everything you’ve said here. You mean they want to do whatever will make them the most money and they’ve already been up front about how accurate reporting of facts is not really their thing so they’ll report anything that makes them more profitable that the audience will buy? There’s some serious cognitive dissonance here.
