That works so excellently for the military. You’re technically able to be called back in at any time, but you’re also allowed to drink when you could reasonably expect to have that time off.

And the clincher; you’re not allowed to be drunk on duty, so they can’t even say “no worries, I’ll pick you up” without implicating whoever ordered you in

Loved watching people race back to the barracks and crack open a beer as soon as they walked in the door… Wonder why we have an alcohol related incidents problem in the US Armed Forces…?..

        Hmm…

Unless it’s an actual emergency and they can’t get anyone better. In which case the whole drunk thing will be swept under the rug. Unless that causes an incident.

I’ve done this before to family members who want lifts on my day off. “Yeah sure. I’ve had a few pints but if you don’t mind then I don’t. Oh ok, no worries then, catch you soon.”

The fucking worst trap in the world is:

What are you up to today?

on the morning someone needs a favor. Fuck right off.

I always answer with something like “working on something that might take a little while or might take a long time, but I don’t know yet”.

But this game-playing is beneath me—or I would like for it to be—so I invite suggestions.

Haha. They know what they are doing. I assume that if someone won’t say outright what they are proposing it’s because they suspect I won’t want to do it or else they are simply bored and want me to amuse them. I feel incredibly cynical but am usually right unfortunately.
