Old School Runescape forces you to change your character into a girl to complete a quest. You can easily change back afterwards, but I never did for some reason.

they actually changed that back in 2022. previously, you had to fight a knight blessed by the gods so that no man could harm him, so you would have to change your character to a woman in order to harm him. however they changed it so now no blade can harm him, and the player is given four different weapons, where one of them is a warhammer, allowing him to be defeated (since it doesn’t have a blade)

In a world of magic i don’t really see how it does.

I am a cis male who likes his pronouns but i recognize myself much more fluid then most. Theres a type of frilly dress and shoes I really like that i think would look really good if i grew out my beard.

My point is if i could take such a potion to chose biological gender features i probably by in bulk to spend the odd day relaxing at a wellness looking pretty while doing it.

I never encountered this quest but i could see it act as a subtle nudge for people to discover that there identity isnt so black and white as our sex makes it seem.

I fully agree with this sentiment as a trans person. I could very much see this quest ‘cracking someone’s egg’ (i.e. realising they’re trans).

Theres a type of frilly dress and shoes I really like that i think would look really good if i grew out my beard

I have a friend that’s a cis man who has a gorgeous beard and likes to be fluid with his presentation as well. He loves wearing cute dresses and mary jane’s, and always has rlly pretty nails.

You should absolutely rock that look. I’m really here for people wearing whatever makes them the most happy, the concept of gendering clothes is just dumb.

I am not comfortable with permanent and longer lasting changes, especially if they can effect my fertility.

The dream is to look the way i feel life for a particular day but keep my current form. Of which i am quite happy for 95% of the time.

that’s actually a pretty cool, it gives me a weird game idea/mechanic - you turn into the opposite gender of what you picked for a quest, or until the end of the game, and your character also faces the extreme downsides that would have (gender dysphoria), and it could heavily effect your performance because of the mental strain

I mean, it sounds like having a quest where your character’s leg was chopped off. Like yes, it’s legit that this would make your life worse but I don’t think that’s the kind of challenge that people are looking for in a video game 😅

There’s an obscure SNES RPG (Secret of the Stars, I think it was called?) that has an armor you can equip to change the character’s sprite to a girl, and a quest where you have to equip that armor on all your male characters in order to enter an Amazon village.

Really liked that game, and that particular armor. Didn’t really understand why at the time.

I heard of this case where a person suffered a head injury and was unable to speak English because of it, they were only able to speak a foreign language (I don’t remember what it was specifically). So yeah you can forget it midway through the game, or anywhere else. Nintendo just likes to lock people into choices, I think it might be a Japanese thing (it’s why you can’t aren’t allowed to change your name in any of their games).

Your game is only inclusive if you can change genders mid game???

Fuck me if I were a game designer and had to consider every audience who might be offended by any design decision.

Insert meme “chess is ablist because it requires too much concentration.”

Hello, game designer here. We don’t worry a lot about pc gender as it is mechanically agnostic, and as a feature it has a minimal effort involved with such a design decision. We do however consider who we offend at every stage of the development, and who we appeal to at every turn. The insane plethora of game enjoyers being incredibly different in tastes, styles and ability takes up most of the work of being a designer

Honestly, it’s always better to just have customizable characters as a default if it’s possible specifically for this reason.

Inclusitvity is being able to play as either gender. Being able to switch mid-game is just a niche convenience thing. Personally I haven’t ever felt the need to switch during a playthrough, if the game is good, I wouldn’t mind starting a new one, but obviously there’s nothing wrong with having the option.

Then there’s Dark Souls 2 where very early in the game there’s a coffin that gives you the option to enter. Do so, and you come out the opposite sex you were when you went in.

Okay but in fairness pokemans has been checking your pronouns at the beginning of the game since the 90s. Surely there has to be an enby romhack somewhere.

Stardew Valley: Change your gender at will. Choose from any and all appearance and clothing options regardless of what gender you’ve selected. Date and marry absolutely any eligible bachelor(ette)s regardless of gender (or better yet, date everyone and make Krobus your roommate). Oh, and everyone in the game treats you with respect and is just totally cool about all of it.
